Blue Roma Quartzite Kitchen Countertops in Rapid City, South Dakota

Project Backstory

When our client in Rapid City, South Dakota wanted more color and movement in their kitchen, we reached for Blue Roma quartzite. Its cool blue-gray background and soft veining gave the room a natural focal point without overwhelming the rest of the space.

We ran the quartzite across the countertops and carried it up the wall as a full-height backsplash, so the veining flows from the work surface straight up behind the range. On the island we added a waterfall drop, letting the stone fall over the end panel to the floor for one clean, continuous line.

Quartzite was the right choice for a hardworking kitchen here in the Black Hills. It holds up to daily cooking and prep, and the Blue Roma slab we selected gives the homeowners a surface that feels specific to their home. The finished kitchen reads calm and current, and it should stay that way for years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to the most common questions about our quartzite countertops here.

Yes. Quartzite is a natural stone that rates high for hardness, so it resists scratches and everyday wear well. It also handles hot pans better than many softer stones. We still suggest a cutting board and trivets to keep the finish looking its best over time.

Quartzite is less porous than marble, but we seal it to guard against staining from oil, wine, and other spills. A good sealer usually lasts a year or more. A quick test: leave a few drops of water on the surface, and if it soaks in rather than beading, it is time to reseal.

Despite the similar names, they are not the same. Quartzite is a natural stone cut from quarried slabs, so each piece carries its own veining like the Blue Roma we installed. Quartz is an engineered material made from ground stone and resin, which gives a more uniform look. Homeowners who want natural variation tend to prefer quartzite.
